Before he was Muhammed Ali, he was Cassius Clay–a kid growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, and a legend waiting to happen. Told in a mix of prose from the viewpoint of his best friend Lucky and verse illustrating Cassius’s view, this biographical novel is perfect for middle school readers. It gives us a glimpse of Ali’s history as well as his drive and determination that helped him become one of the greatest sports heroes of all time.

With a story both relatable and inspirational, I recommend Becoming Muhammed Ali to all types of readers. Middle grade, tweens, and even teens will enjoy the story and the character, not to mention the wonderful use of language. A quick, entertaining, and inspirational read.

Recommended ages–10-13 years old
