The precarious balance between wizards and the people of the city of Fellsmarch is close to toppling. In the midst of the unrest, two young people will meet with life changes that affect them and the kingdom around them. Han Alister has tried to leave his life on the streets, but he finds it hard to support his mother and sister any other way. Leaving that life is harder when several members of a rival gang are murdered and Han is blamed.
At the same time, Princess Raisa is approaching her name day celebration. This will mark her entrance into adulthood and make her eligible for marriage. However, Raisa has enjoyed freedom with her father's family in the Demonai camp and isn't ready to give up that freedom for a political marriage. To make matters worse, Raisa's mother is too easily influenced by the High Wizard and his plans threaten to send the entire realm into war.
This well-crafted medieval fantasy introduces a new world and some strong, but flawed main characters. The plot is engaging and the story is age appropriate. It is a good, safe read for young adult fantasy lovers.
