In a modern, New York, Alice in Wonderland-type experience, Gregor and his little sister fall through a heating vent into a new world. This world is populated by a people who ride the underground tunnels on giant, talking bats. These same people are at war with human-sized talking rats. Gregor and Boots are swept up in this war and meet many interesting characters as they try to get home to the Overland of New York.
